2017 is finally here, and the biggest event at Walt Disney World this year will be the opening of Pandora: The World of AVATAR at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Based on the hit James Cameron movie, this massive expansion will feature two brand new attractions and some of the most unique work Walt Disney Imagineering has done to date. You can read more about Animal Kingdom’s Pandora here.

So far, we’ve only heard that Disney World’s Avatar expansion will open sometime in Summer 2017. Thankfully, a returning discount for Florida residents may hold a clue to when guests can step foot into Pandora for themselves. Read on to find out.

First off, the tickets: Florida residents can purchase discounted “Discover Disney” tickets. The tickets are $139 for 3 days or $159 for 4 days (ages 3 and up). The tickets do have very specific blackout dates: May 27th – June 9th 2017 only at Animal Kingdom.

Because the blackout dates are exclusive to Animal Kingdom, it only makes sense that Disney would be trying to keep crowds manageable during the grand opening of Pandora. The dates line up with Memorial Day Weekend, which is the start of the summer season for Walt Disney World. Disney has done some fun events around Memorial Day in the recent past, including a couple of 24-hour days. Last year, Soarin’ Around the World and Frozen Ever After debuted around the same time period. Opening a major expansion 6 years in the making would seem to be a fitting way to kick off summer.

Does this mean you should book your Disney World vacation for May 27th so you can be one of the first people to experience Avatar in Orlando? While it seems likely at this point, nothing has been officially announced, and everything is subject to change anyway.
