Disney World just made two changes that fix the biggest pain points at one of my favorite bars on property. Here’s what you need to know about Trader Sam’s new hours and the long-awaited mobile waitlist.

ToggleTrader Sam’s Has Always Been Worth the Wait… But the Wait Was the Problem
But now, everyone knows the secret.
That’s been the problem. The bar is tiny with just over 50 seats, the demand is massive, and until now, getting inside required showing up around 1:30 pm just to put your name on a waitlist for a 3 pm opening. If you weren’t willing to camp out in that hallway before the bar even opened, good luck getting a seat inside the Grog Grotto.
Disney just fixed both of those pain points.
Change #1: Trader Sam’s Now Opens at 11 AM
The first upgrade: Trader Sam’s now opens at 11 am instead of 3 pm.
That’s four extra hours to grab a Hippopoto-Mai-Tai or Polynesian Punch, and it gives guests way more flexibility in their touring day. Previously, if you wanted to experience Trader Sam’s, you were locked into a late afternoon or evening commitment. Now you can swing by before heading to Magic Kingdom for the afternoon, or grab a late-morning drink / snack without restructuring your entire day around it.
Both the indoor Grog Grotto and the outdoor Tiki Terrace now open at 11 am daily.
Change #2: Walk-Up Waitlist Now Available in the App
This is the bigger deal. Trader Sam’s now has a mobile Walk-Up Waitlist in the My Disney Experience app.
If you’ve used the Walk-Up List feature for restaurants like Be Our Guest or Oga’s Cantina, you know how this works. You can join the waitlist directly from the app, see an approximate wait time before you commit, and get notified when your table is ready: no physical line required.
Previously, you had to walk to the bar in person to get on the list. People would start lining up around 1-1:30 pm just to put their name down for the 3 pm opening. It was a huge time sink, and honestly kept even me from going to one of my favorite spots at Disney World on quite a few occasions.
One important note: There’s a geofence on the waitlist, which means you need to be physically near the Polynesian to join. You can’t add yourself from Magic Kingdom or your hotel across property. But once you’re in the area, you can join from anywhere on the resort grounds rather than standing in that hallway.
Why This Is a Game-Changer for Families
Here’s something that’s easy to overlook: Trader Sam’s is 21+ after 8 pm, but families are welcome before that. With the old 3 pm opening, that gave families a five-hour window to experience the Grog Grotto. Now? That window nearly doubles to nine hours.
This matters more than you might think. Trader Sam’s is one of the best immersive themed experiences at Disney World. The room comes alive when certain drinks are ordered: volcano eruptions, rain effects, the whole production. The theming rivals anything in the parks, and the interactive elements make it genuinely entertaining for all ages.
Families can order non-alcoholic options like the Skipper Sipper, and the food menu has solid options like the pork dumplings that work well for kids. With the expanded hours, you can now hit Trader Sam’s for an early lunch or mid-afternoon snack without racing against the 8 pm cutoff.
If you’ve been skipping Trader Sam’s because you assumed it was adults-only, the new hours make it much more realistic to bring the whole family. Just plan to visit before 8 pm.
The Bottom Line
Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto itself has always been amazing… the problem was getting inside. These two changes should make Trader Sam’s significantly more accessible for guests who couldn’t justify the old waitlist rigamarole.
Trader Sam’s is now my second-favorite bar at Disney World (Beak and Barrel has my heart), but these upgrades make it a much easier recommendation for first-time visitors, especially for families who want to experience one of Disney’s best-themed spaces without staying out past bedtime.
What’s your favorite bar at Disney World? Let me know in the comments. And if you haven’t experienced Trader Sam’s yet, now’s the time to try.
