Are you ready to plug into the Grid? Disney World’s next giant attraction finally has an opening date. Tron Lightcycle Run will open on April 4, 2023 at Magic Kingdom.

Previously, Disney had announced that Tron Lightcycle Run would be opening as part of Disney World’s 50th Anniversary celebration. Disney World has said that this commemoration would run for 18 months, from October 2021 through March 2023. Tron will be missing this celebration by just 4 days when it opens on 4/4/23. However, come April, I doubt coaster enthusiasts and Disney World visitors will mind that technicality too much.

What is Tron Lightcycle Run?

Tron Lightcycle Run - Disney World Roller Coaster April 4 2023

Tron Lightcycle Run is a launched motorbike style roller coaster, which first debuted to rave reviews as Tron Lightcycle Power Run at Shanghai Disneyland in 2016. The ride in Magic Kingdom should be essentially an identical clone of the Shanghai version, including having both indoor and outdoor portions.

According to Disney Parks Blog:

The story of TRON Lightcycle / Run picks up after “TRON: Legacy” where Kevin’s son, Sam Flynn, has opened a second gateway into a digital realm called the Grid. The first of these portals he created is found at Shanghai Disneyland with the original TRON Lightcycle Power Run.

When you enter the queue at Magic Kingdom, you’ll feel as if you’re digitized and transported to the Grid for a special Lightcycle race. It’s your Team Blue against the Grid’s menacing Programs, Team Orange. Your goal is to be the first to race through eight Energy Gates and secure victory. The attraction will be one of the fastest coasters at any Disney theme park in the world.

Tron Lightcycle Run features a launch, as well as top speeds of 60 mph — making it the fastest Disney coaster anywhere in the world. The ride features a distinctive Lightcycle ride vehicle, which has guests sitting in a motorbike position. If you’ve been on Avatar: Flight of Passage, you will be familiar with how this type of vehicle feels.

The Tron roller coaster is located next to Space Mountain at Tomorrowland in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom.

Will there be Cast Member, DVC, and Annual Passholder previews?

Yes. According to Disney:

Before the attraction officially opens, cast members will be the first to enter the Grid during special previews. And I heard preview opportunities are coming for guests too, including Annual Passholders and eligible Disney Vacation Club Members.

Will there be a virtual queue for Tron at Magic Kingdom?

Right now, Disney hasn’t announced if Tron Lightcycle Run will feature a virtual queue. But I would bet on there being a virtual queue when the attraction opens. Disney World has used a virtual queue with Rise of the Resistance, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, and Guardians of the Galaxy when each of those attractions debuted. The only new major attraction that did not implement a virtual queue at WDW when it opened was Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, which opened shortly after the more complex Rise of the Resistance.

Stay tuned to Guide2WDW for more updates about preview dates and potential Virtual Queues.
