Getting Around Disney World for Free
Free Disney Transportation
Disney World offers complimentary transportation that anyone can use—no park ticket or resort reservation required. The system includes monorails, buses, boats, and the Skyliner, connecting the parks, resorts, and Disney Springs.
The boats and Skyliner are particularly enjoyable, offering scenic views that feel like attractions themselves. My kids literally ask to ride the Skyliner like it’s a theme park ride. These transportation options are perfect for getting to the next free item on this list.
Resort Hopping: A Free Disney Adventure
Explore Disney World’s Resort Hotels
You don’t need to be a guest to tour Disney’s resort hotels. You can freely explore the lobbies, dine at restaurants, and soak in the themed environments. The easiest approach is using Disney’s free transportation system, since parking policies vary by resort.
Consider planning a resort-hopping day by grouping locations together:
- All the Monorail resorts (Contemporary, Polynesian, Grand Floridian)
- Epcot area resorts (BoardWalk, Beach Club, Yacht Club)
- Skyliner resorts (Caribbean Beach, Riviera, Pop Century, Art of Animation)
The holiday season is especially magical for resort hopping, when each property features unique decorations and theming.
Animal Kingdom Lodge: Free Animal Viewing
My family recently spent an entire off-park day at Animal Kingdom Lodge, and it was one of the highlights of our trip.
Watch Disney Fireworks Without Park Admission

You can view fireworks from several locations outside the parks:
- Epcot area: The BoardWalk area offers excellent viewing, especially the bridge near Cape May Cafe
- Magic Kingdom resorts: All the Monorail resorts provide viewing spots, and some locations pipe in the music (even during special party nights)
- Coronado Springs: Dahlia Lounge on the top floor has a patio with Epcot fireworks views
Disney Springs: The Free Entertainment Hub
Disney Springs is one of the best completely free areas at Disney World, packed with shopping, dining, and entertainment opportunities.
Free Parking and Transportation
Disney Springs offers ample free parking in massive parking structures, plus complimentary buses and water taxi service from Disney resorts.
Free Samples and Treats
Several locations throughout Disney Springs offer complimentary samples:
- Ghirardelli: Free chocolate samples (an all-time favorite)
- Wondermade Marshmallows: Free marshmallow samples at their kiosk
- Goofy’s Candy Co.: Occasional candy samples
- Basin: Free soap and body scrub samples (just don’t eat these ones)
If you’re staying at a Good Neighbor hotel in the Disney Springs area, check for coupon books with offers like free appetizers at participating restaurants.
Free Activities for Kids at Disney Springs
Disney Springs features numerous complimentary activities perfect for families:
- LEGO Store: Free LEGO play areas and racing stations
- Coca-Cola Store: Meet the Coca-Cola polar bear
- Splash Pad: Free water play area near Earl of Sandwich
- T-REX Paleozone: A massive sand pit where kids can dig for fossils (great for families missing the recently closed Boneyard at Animal Kingdom)
Free Entertainment
Throughout the year, Disney Springs hosts free concerts at the Waterside Stage.
Free Photo Studio
The Disney PhotoPass Studio at Disney Springs offers free photo shoots, often with seasonal backdrops. The pictures taken here work just like any PhotoPass picture taken at the parks. If you have Memory Maker, you can download all these pictures. Or you can just enjoy the free photo session for fun!
Free Scavenger Hunt
During the holidays, the Christmas Tree Stroll features a scavenger hunt where you find 21 themed trees throughout the complex. You can get a free map and turn it in for a special surprise. This year, new Magic Band Plus touch points are being added to trees like the Nightmare Before Christmas display.
Free Ice Water
Throughout Disney Springs and the resorts, you can request free ice water from any quick service restaurant, Joffrey’s Coffee, or Starbucks location. Don’t waste money on bottled water when this option exists.
Celebration Buttons
Free celebration buttons are available at all Disney resorts and the Welcome Center at Disney Springs. You can get these for:
- Birthdays
- First visits
- Special celebrations
- Really any occasion
Cast members often provide extra magic when they see you wearing these buttons.
Birthday Freebies: Stack the Rewards
If you strategically sign up for rewards programs before your birthday, you can collect an impressive haul of free treats, especially at Disney Springs:
- Starbucks Rewards: Free birthday coffee (redeemable at Disney Springs locations)
- Sprinkles Rewards: Free cupcake
- Earl of Sandwich E-Rewards: Free sandwich or treat
- Landry’s Select Club: $25 birthday gift card (usable at Rainforest Cafe, T-REX, and Yak & Yeti in Animal Kingdom). The $25 membership fee is offset by a $25 sign-up bonus gift card
- Wetzel’s Pretzels Rewards: Birthday freebie
- Sephora Beauty Insider: Free birthday gift
Beyond these rewards programs, wearing your birthday button throughout Disney World often leads to magical surprises from cast members. Some restaurants offer free desserts, and you never know what special moments might happen. It’s not guaranteed and definitely shouldn’t be demanded, but remain open to the possibility.
Making the Most of Free Disney
These free offerings work whether you’re taking a break from the parks during a multi-day trip or experiencing Disney magic without buying tickets. The transportation system, resort exploring, Disney Springs, and all these complimentary activities can easily fill an entire day.
Want to know about even more free things at Disney World? This is just part one of my “It’s Fun to Be Free” series. Part two covers everything that’s free inside the theme parks themselves—including one unique freebie that most guests don’t even know exists.
Have you taken advantage of any of these free Disney World offerings? What are your favorite ways to experience Disney magic without spending money? Let me know in the comments!
